The African Union

It was disbanded on 9 July 2002 by its last chairman, South African President Thabo Mbeki, and replaced by the African Union (AU). Some of the key aims of the OAU were to encourage political and economic integration among member states, and to eradicate colonialism and neo-colonialism from the African continent.

The Objectives of the AU

• To achieve greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and the peoples of Africa;

The two major sources of funding of the AU are African member states and donors. The AU relies on the yearly contributions from 55 member countries and support from bilateral and multilateral donors to finance its operational costs, programmes and peace support operations.
