Why is cloud portability so important?

Cloud services are almost 20 years old, if the launch of Amazon S3 in 2006 is considered the start of the cloud era. But for all the early hype about the model being 'as-a-service' and 'on-demand', the reality is that the cloud has become just another delivery channel for most businesses, procured and managed in the same way.

Moving a workload from one provider to another might be a simple task if all clouds were the same. The problem is that they aren't, and there are various barriers to actually switching suppliers, as the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has discovered during its investigation into the market.

There are differences in APIs and protocols between clouds, not to mention features in the services offered by the various providers, to name just a few of the technical barriers to portability.
