Magellan flagship Of these five ships, one was lost at sea (Santiago), one abandoned the expedition (San Antonio) in South America and returned to Spain, one was damaged and then burned by the crew (Concepcion) and lost at Cebu in the Phillipines on 21 December 1521 when Magellan was killed.

In subsequent fighting on April 27, Magellan was hit by a poisoned arrow and left to die by his retreating comrades. After Magellan’s death, the survivors, in two ships, sailed on to the Moluccas and loaded the hulls with spice. One ship attempted, unsuccessfully, to return across the Pacific.

Magellan himself was killed in battle on the voyage, but his ambitious expedition proved that the globe could be circled by sea and that the world was much larger than had previously been imagined.

Only one ship of the original five — and only 18 men of the original 270 — survived the voyage.

Near the end of the voyage one of the two remaining ships was captured by the Portugese and wrecked in a storm. In 1522, three years after the expedition began, Elcano returned to Spain with only 17 crew members and only one of Magellan’s five ships.

The voyage contributed to Europeans’ knowledge of the universe and has marked the worlds of space exploration and astronomy to this day. While crossing the Magellan Strait, the explorer and his crew observed two galaxies visible to the naked eye from the southern hemisphere, now known as the Magellanic Clouds.

Though the stated goal of Magellan’s expedition was to find a passage through South America to the Moluccas, and return to Spain laden with spices, at this point in the journey, Magellan seemed to acquire a zeal for converting the local tribes to Christianity.

It opened doors in the places where they passed, where people, ideas and goods were coming and going. It established commercial contacts between East and West that remained for centuries. Also, it promoted the exchange of multiple sorts of experiences (scientific, cultural, religious…).
