In chapter ten Jonas rides to the House of the Old with Fiona, who is nervous about going in even though she has been there many times before. She tells Jonas she will ride home with him later if they get out at the same time. Jonas walks behind the building the Annex.

One family just lost a son, a four-year-old named Caleb, when he drowned in the river. Afterwards, everyone partook in the Ceremony of Loss, where they repeated the name of the dead boy softer and softer until everyone forgot about him. And now today, the family gets a new Caleb!

Jonas chills out on the bed and waits for the memory of snow. All of a sudden, he’s very cold. He can no longer feel the old man’s hands on his back. He feels something like pinpricks on his skin, and sticks out his tongue to catch the falling white things.

The Giver Chapter 8. Everyone in the Auditorium is uncomfortable and confused. Jonas is humiliated and terrified. After the final Assignment, the Chief Elder speaks again, first apologizing to the community for the anxiety she has caused them to feel.

The Receiver of Memory. Evidently, this a big deal, because the crowd all basically gasps. The Chief Elder explains that the community has only one Receiver at a time, and that the current Receiver—an old man—trains the next one.

When he arrives a minute late to his session with The Giver, The Giver asks him why he arrived late. The Giver responds that the community had to give up some things in order to gain control of others. When Jonas says that the community should not have made such a choice, The Giver tells him that he is gaining wisdom.

Their lives are celebrated. When an elderly person is released, they enter the room through a “special door.” Larissa, an elderly person, explains the process to Jonas. She also notes that the room is not large. The committee members seem to be the only people who know what happens in the Release Room.

Why is Lily skeptical of Jonas’s story about the elephants? She is afraid of elephants, so she thinks Jonas is just trying to scare her. Lily has been raised to think that elephants are imaginary creatures. Lily is an expert on elephants and knows they would never behave in the way Jonas describes them.

What happened to the pilot who flew too close to the community a year ago? He was suspended.

It was family, Grandparents, and love. What question did Jonas ask his parents after his session with The Giver? What was their answer? He asked if they loved him.

What did Jonas ask The Giver when he woke from his dream? To receive a memory of death. To be relieved of pain.

What is the Giver’s favorite memory? The Giver’s favorite memory is a happy , warm, hoilday celebration with family that includes brightly wrapped presents, colorful decorations, wonderful kitchen smells, a dog lying by the fire, and snow outside.

What was the first question that Jonas asked The Giver in the beginning of chapter 18? “Do you ever think about release.”

Why did the Giver apologize to Jonas after sharing the memory of war? It was such a painful memory. It could be a reason he would be released. He rationalizes by saying it would not be orderly for the community but is unhappy that it is not a part of his life since the memory felt so good.

Jonas remembers what The Giver said about the memories that were released after Rosemary left. He realizes that he himself has an entire year’s worth of memories, and asks what would happen if he were to, say, drown in the river. Or something. The Giver advises that he try not to do that.

The Giver Chapter 18 The Giver tells him that sometimes his pain makes him want to apply for a release, but he is not allowed to do it until Jonas is trained. Jonas is not ever permitted to request for a release because of the failure of the Receiver ten years ago.
