When plants are not watered properly they wilt. When a plant is properly hydrated, there is enough water pressure to make the leaves strong and sturdy; when a plant doesn’t get enough water, the pressure inside the stems and leaves drops and they wilt. Plants also need water for photosynthesis.

The roots of the plant take up water but they also need air to breathe. Over-watering, in simple terms, drowns your plant. Soil that is constantly wet won’t have enough air pockets and the roots can’t breathe. Over-watered plants are likely to get root diseases, primarily root rot.

Overwatering, in simple terms, drowns your plant. Healthy soil allows for oxygen to exist in the space between particles of soil. If there is too much water or the soil is constantly wet, there is not enough air pockets. This results in a limited oxygen supply and plants are not able to breathe.

Plants will absorb water through their roots and release water as vapor into the air through these stomata. To survive in drought conditions, plants need to decrease transpiration to limit their water loss. These extreme leaf adaptations can also protect the plants from hungry and thirsty birds and animals (Figure 1).

Plants that can be grown in water must extract oxygen from the oxygen dissolved in the water. It is also possible to grow plants hydroponically. Hydroponically grown plants are grown in a solution of water containing the necessary plant nutrients.

Growth Habit. Baby’s tears forms a flat mat of dense green foliage that spreads indefinitely. It is a tight, weed-suppressing ground cover for shady, moist areas, but it will not tolerate foot traffic.

Baby’s tear houseplant can be planted in regular potting soil kept lightly moistened. Although the baby’s tear houseplant enjoys higher humidity, it also needs good air circulation, so consider this when adding the plant to a terrarium or bottle garden. Do not cover the terrarium if including this plant.
