If it was China, not Europe, that had colonized the Americas, quite probably the resultant world civilization would have been dominated by China. Europe’s rise to world power had been financed by the conquest and looting of a hemisphere, so surely China could manage a similar ascent.

There is no, “What if” – China did become a colonial empire – and still is a colonial empire. Unlike the European colonial empires, China didn’t expand much across the seas. Rather China colonised and expanded into the neighbouring territories within the same landmass.

If Zheng He had discovered America, the ancient civilization which China represented, would have spread over the North and South American continents, in a dynamic process to shape world history and there would be no need for the smaller European kingdoms or for a Christopher Columbus.

And the answer to that is: Almost nothing because Europe would still have colonized the Americas first. Because even though the Chinese discovered Taiwan and the Philippines before the Europeans did and had all the advantages of proximity, Europe colonized those places first too.

If Europeans never colonized and invaded America, the native nations and tribes would continue to interact in trade. Eventually, trade with East Asia and Europe would introduce new technologies and animals into the continent and tribes would quickly grow into nations.

Hiroshima had 46 kg of uranium while Chernobyl had 180 tons of reactor fuel. While the dose of radiation from the atomic bomb would still give be lethal, all these reasons above combined are why the Chernobyl was much worse in terms of radiation.

On August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima that destroyed most of the city and instantly killed 80,000 of its citizens. Today, Hiroshima has recovered into a bustling manufacturing hub with a population of 1.1 million people and counting.

Today, over 1.6 million people live and seem to be thriving in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, yet the Chernobyl exclusion zone, a 30 square kilometer area surrounding the plant, remains relatively uninhabited.

Of course it is safe to live in Hiroshima and in Nagasaki! Nuclear bombs have much less radioactive material than in a nuclear power plant, and they decompose very easily compared to the sheer radiation emitted by the Chernobyl plant. On August 13, 1945—four days after the bombing of Nagasaki—two military officials had a phone conversation about how many more bombs to detonate over Japan and when. According to the declassified conversation, there was a third bomb set to be dropped on August 19th.

Despite looking normal, Chernobyl’s animals and plants are mutants. According to a 2001 study in Biological Conservation, Chernobyl-caused genetic mutations in plants and animals increased by a factor of 20.

As a result, Reactor No. 4 was completely destroyed, and therefore enclosed in a concrete and lead sarcophagus, followed more recently by a large steel confinement shelter, to prevent further escape of radioactivity. Large areas of Europe were affected by the accident.
