Why Is Community Important to Mental Health? We’re social beings, and we are not meant to live in isolation. Community is critical for us to thrive, especially for someone with mental illness who is already experiencing the common symptoms of loneliness and isolation.

As such, a healthy community is one in which all residents have access to a quality education, safe and healthy homes, adequate employment, transportation, physical activity, and nutrition, in addition to quality health care. Unhealthy communities lead to chronic disease, such as cancers, diabetes, and heart disease.

Balanced community-based mental health services reflect several key principles: autonomy, continuity, effectiveness, accessibility, comprehensiveness, equity, accountability, coordination and efficiency (8) (see Annex 2 for definitions).
