A metaphor compares two things by talking about one thing and saying it is like another. Even though the two things are different, they share a similarity of some kind. Here is an example of a metaphor: Example: The dog’s bed is a marshmallow, it looks so comfortable.

How to create fantastic metaphors.

1. Choose a character, object, or setting. Say, for example, you’re going to write a metaphor about a soccer goalie.
2. Focus on a particular scene you’re describing.
3. Now think of some other objects that share characteristics you identified in Step 1.
4. Take your metaphor and expand on it.

While both similes and metaphors are used to make comparisons, the difference between similes and metaphors comes down to a word. Similes use the words like or as to compare things—“Life is like a box of chocolates.” In contrast, metaphors directly state a comparison—“Love is a battlefield.”

D. H. Lawrence uses personification throughout his poem “Snake.” In order use this literary device he gives human qualities to the snake, and speaks about it as if it is a person. The narrator describes the snake as “someone” instead of as an animal.

Both simile and personification mingle two very different essences, but personification does so with a specific methodology. In personification, one of the elements is a living thing or at least suggests a living thing, while the other clearly is not.

Simile is a comparison like “as as a <thing>”. For example “as cunning as a fox” or “as thick as two short planks”. It’s possible to use both simile and personification at once.

Personification involves attributing human characteristics to a non-human being or object, or representing an abstract quality in human form. Metaphor is an indirect comparison between two unrelated things without using connecting words such as like or as.

An idiom is a common phrase which means something different from its literal meaning but can be understood because of their popular use. Idioms are not the same thing as slang. Idioms are made of normal words that have a special meaning known to almost everyone.
