All matter is made up of very small particles called atoms. Atoms are the building blocks of all matter. When a substance contains only one type of atom, it is called an element. Each element has a special name and unique properties that are different from all the rest of the elements.

A chemical element is a pure substance that consists of one type of atom. Each atom has an atomic number, which represents the number of protons that are in the nucleus of a single atom of that element. The periodic table of elements is ordered by ascending atomic number.

There are two types of mixtures: heterogeneous and homogeneous. Heterogeneous mixtures have visually distinguishable components, while homogeneous mixtures appear uniform throughout. The most common type of homogenous mixture is a solution, which can be a solid, liquid, or gas.

Mixtures can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous’: a mixture in which constituents are distributed uniformly is called homogeneous, such as salt in water, otherwise it is called heterogeneous, such as sand in water.

After air and water, sand is our most used natural resource. We use it even more than oil. It’s used to make food, wine, toothpaste, glass, computer chips, breast implants, cosmetics, paper, paint, plastics.

As sand is solid, it does not dissolve in water, forming 2 different phases present in the mixture of sand and water. Hence, it is a heterogeneous mixture.

Sand is a mixture. Sand is classified as a heterogeneous mixture because it does not have the same properties, composition and appearance throughout the mixture. A homogeneous mixture has a uniform mix throughout. The main component of sand is SiO2, silicon dioxide.

Even the wood in your pencil is considered a mixture. There is the basic cellulose of the wood, but there are also thousands of other compounds in that pencil. Solutions are also mixtures, but all of the molecules are evenly spread out through the system. They are called homogenous mixtures.

Egg is a mixture as it contains different components which do not have a fixed ratio.
