A theme evokes a universal human experience and can be stated in one word or short phrase (for example, “love,” “death,” or “coming of age”). The theme may never be stated explicitly, but it is exemplified by the film’s plot, dialogue, cinematography, and music (like the telling Batman theme song).

‘Themes’ are features of participants’ accounts characterising particular perceptions and/or experiences that the researcher sees as relevant to the research question. ‘Coding’ is the process of identifying themes in accounts and attaching labels (codes) to index them.

Theme identification is one of the most fundamental tasks in qualitative research. It also is one of the most mysterious. Explicit descriptions of theme discovery are rarely found in articles and reports, and when they are, they are often relegated to appendi- ces or footnotes.
