Urination is the release of urine from the urinary bladder through the urethra to the outside of the body. It is the urinary system’s form of excretion. It is also known medically as micturition, voiding, uresis, or, rarely, emiction, and known colloquially by various names including peeing, weeing, and pissing.

Why is pee yellow? Your kidneys break down old hemoglobin, which is a portion of your red blood cells, and release the waste via your urine. Under normal circumstances, your body produces urine that is clear or straw-yellow. When you have a UTI, you may notice cloudy urine with traces of blood. You may even experience feeling the strong urge to go even when your bladder isn’t full, an increase in frequency and a foul smell.

“But if your urine is clear and you’re peeing 20 times a day, you’re drinking water excessively.” While almost any shade of yellow is considered “normal” when it comes to pee, Moore says darker hues indicate you need to drink more fluids, preferably water.

Diabetes insipidus is a rare condition that causes your body to make a lot of urine that is “insipid,” or colorless and odorless.

Patients with diabetes insipidus have high amounts of urine that is diluted (clear) because of this inability to control the amount of water in the urine. Most cases of diabetes insipidus occur because there isn’t enough ADH, or because the kidneys are not responding properly to ADH.

If you have diabetes, you may notice your pee smells sweet or fruity. This is because the body is trying to get rid of the excess blood sugar and is disposing of glucose through your urine. For people who haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes, this symptom can be one of the first signs they have the disease.

Things you can try at home:

1. Wear underwear made of natural materials, such as cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics.
2. Wear loose-fitting boxers.
3. Shower twice daily.
4. Apply cornstarch to help control moisture and odor.
5. Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol.

Most changes in urine odor are temporary and don’t mean you have a serious illness, particularly if you have no other symptoms.
