Over nearly three millennia, Cambodians have developed a unique Cambodian culture and belief system from the syncreticism of indigenous animistic beliefs and the Indian religions of Buddhism and Hinduism. The Kingdom of Funan was most probably the first Cambodian state to benefit from this influx of Indian ideas.

There’s a lot more to this part of the world than just its cool travel features, however. Cambodia, a small nation between Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos, is a southeastern Asian country with a long past and an active culture. People have been living and farming in southeastern Asia for thousands of years.

Family comes first, second and third in Cambodia, with life revolving around the home. Families also tend to be large, with siblings, aunties, uncles, cousins and other distant relatives coming together during large celebrations, such as Pchum Ben and Khmer New Year, to celebrate.

The French began to make money off of Cambodia, opening up farms to plant the trees that create rubber, but didn’t share the money with Cambodia, leaving the country poor and frustrated. By 1953 Cambodia had become a fully independent country. However, its problems were far from over.

The Khmer Rouge were some of the most horrific rulers in all of human history. They broke up families, completely banned religion and many freedoms, and killed nearly two million people. When Cambodia was weak, Vietnam invaded and took control during the 1980s.
