Air-fuel ratio cylinder imbalance is a condition where the air-fuel ratio in one or more cylinders is different than the other cylinders. When air-fuel ratio cylinder imbalance occurs in one or more cylinders the fuel delivery system is unable to maintain a proper vehicle emission level.

Cylinder Balance Test A cylinder power balance test locates the cylinder causing a lack of power and not contributing to the engine’s balance and performance. Use this test along with a cylinder compression and cylinder leakage test to pinpoint the problem.

The engine power balance test measures; the power that a particular cylinder contributes to the total power of the engine. The engine power balance test uses the cylinder’s effect on the engine’s speed to determine this power. While the engine is running, either a spark plug or primary circuit is grounded.

An inline three-cylinder engine is essentially a straight six engine lopped in half. This means that the primary and secondary forces are balanced vertically, but the torque over the reciprocating pistons is not matched in unison like in an I6. Instead, the engine is trying to naturally rotate and flip over on itself.

Meaning of rocking couple : Another form of vibration that ocurrs when there are only two cylinders that fire 180° apart instead of 360° apart. Vibration or unbalance set up by a alternating rising and falling of two masses that are out of phase.

Balance. A disadvantage of a straight-five over a straight-six engine is that a straight-five engine is not inherently balanced. Any even-firing straight-five design has free moments (vibrations) of the first and second order, while a straight-six has effectively no imbalance in the first or second order.

I have been around the Volvo 5-cylinder engines now for almost 20 years. I have to say that once you take good care of it (Timing Belt, WP at proper intervals), the 5-cyl engine is virtually indestructible. Some members in this forum have over 300K miles etc.

From a driving experience, five-cylinder engines have the best aspects of four and six cylinder engines. They generate more power and torque than four cylinder engines, while maintaining the fuel economy and “pep” of smaller four cylinder engines.

With a 5 cyl engine it would take a 5 crank crankshaft and I would only get a power stroke every 144 deg of crankshaft rotation. So for the same displacement a straight 5 would be quite a bit longer than a V6 and would have more torsional vibration.

The LLR Vortec 3700 is one version of the only 5-cylinder engine General Motors has ever made available in the U.S. More common, though hardly common by absolute standards, is the 5-cylinder engine. Chevrolet markets most of its non-diesel truck engines under the Vortec banner.

Let’s look back at the history of Volvo’s 5-cylinder engine, where it came from, and delve a little more into why this peculiar engine flourished for so long. The 5-cylinder fits much better in the compact transverse engine compartments of modern cars than an inline-6, but provides more power than an inline-4.
