Collective punishment is a form of retaliation whereby a suspected perpetrator’s family members, friends, acquaintances, sect, class, political affiliation, neighbors or entire ethnic group is targeted.

Losing access to a toy, being grounded, and losing reward tokens are all examples of negative punishment. In each case, something good is being taken away as a result of the individual’s undesirable behavior.

Under the 1949 Geneva Conventions collective punishment is considered a war crime. “No general penalty, pecuniary or otherwise, shall be inflicted upon the population on account of the acts of individuals for which they cannot be regarded as jointly and severally responsible.”

Schooling is not armed conflict of any sort. Unless your teacher is from the opposing army and you’re in the middle of a war and the holding after the bell has huge damages to you, the Geneva Conventions don’t apply. Article 86 of the Geneva Convention says that students aren’t people, though.

The document has no provisions for punishment, but violations can bring moral outrage and lead to trade sanctions or other kinds of economic reprisals against the offending government.
