Jasper Johns (born May 15, 1930) is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker whose work is associated with abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and pop art. He is well known for his depictions of the American flag and other US-related topics.

For three semesters he attended the University of South Carolina at Columbia, where his art teachers urged him to move to New York, which he did in late 1948. There he saw numerous exhibitions and attended the Parsons School of Design for a semester.

Johns let the process of painting the number sequence dictate the structure of the painting. This allowed him to concentrate on the qualities of the paint itself, exploring colour and thickness. The result is a highly abstract structure, but one rooted firmly in the real world.

Encaustic is wax, it doesn’t dry but rather solidifies. That process of heating the wax will liquify the wax. When removed from the heat source the wax will cool and solidify very quickly. Fusing with hot tools will extend the workability of the medium

Canvas is not suitable for encaustic medium as it expands and contracts and could cause the wax to crack and flake off

You can use encaustic wax cakes, oils, paint sticks, dry pigments, chalk pastels or oil pastels, depending on the required effect.

The “recipe” for encaustic is simple: pigment plus wax (typically a mixture of beeswax and damar resin). You melt the wax, mix in the pigment, and you have encaustic paint

Domestic electric irons are easy to come by and can offer good quality tools for working encaustic wax, especially for larger areas of wax application, where a smaller iron or tool will lose too much heat to the support as it moves over the large areas.
