While it is famous for one of the towns that Tokyoites want to live the most in Tokyo, Kichijoji is less known to foreign tourists yet. There are numerous popular tourist sites and hidden gems in Kichijoji including a vast park, greenery zoo, unique museums, shopping arcades, Izakaya alleys and so on.

Kichijoji is a brand new location that you can visit in Persona 5 Royal, and it’ll be automatically unlocked once you clear the second story dungeon of the game, Madarame’s art museum. Once Madarame has confessed, Ryuji will introduce you to Kichijoji, where you’ll have access to a bunch of new shops and facilities.

Yongen-Jaya
The Sakura House is a house built in Yongen-Jaya, Shibuya. It is owner by Sojiro Sakura and his adopted daughter, Futaba Sakura. It is not far from Cafe LeBlanc.

According to Twitter, Cafe LeBlanc’s real world inspiration is Cafe de L’ambre in Ginza, an area of Tokyo nowhere near Sangen-Jaya. The photos in the tweet are eerily similar and the owner of the real world cafe has a similar name to Cafe LeBlanc’s owner, Sakura Sojiro.

Yongen-Jaya is the fictional residential home city of the Persona 5 protagonist, Joker. Yongen-Jaya is based on real life Sangen-Jaya Station, located right outside of Toyko, in residential district Setagaya. While Yongen-Java is fictional, several details in the game pay homage to Setagaya.

His personal car is a slightly modified condor yellow Porsche 356, which is shown when he comes to take the protagonist home from prison. Mementos conversations in Royal reveal that Sojiro is a very good driver.

The district’s name comes from Kichijoji temple, burned in 1657 at the beginning of Edo period (1603-1868). Loved by its inhabitants, they kept its name to baptize the surrounding streets. Kichijoji might also have origins from hippies, if we believe the inhabitants’ sayings.

The area is a popular place centre for shopping and leisure in the Tokyo metropolitan area and is also home to Inokashira Park and its zoo. Kichijoji has been voted the number 1 place that people in Japan wish they would live, every year since the 1990s according to polls by the magazine CNN GO.

Kichijōji Station is served by the Chūō Line which runs to Tokyo Central Station in around 30 minutes, Sobu Line, Tozai Line and is also a terminus of the Keiō Inokashira Line, which takes passengers as far as Shibuya, another fashionable shopping center in Tokyo, in around 20 minutes on the express service.

Be aware though that the platform in Shibuya is at a separate location across from Hachinko square. The access is from the street via a long escalator. Just ask around when you get lost. Kichijoji itself is astonishing. A lot of things to see, activities, restaurants, shops etc. You can easily spend a whole day here.
