New Delhi: As the country celebrates the auspicious festival of Makar Sankranti, the state of Gujarat is also celebrating the occasion, which is called Uttarayan in Gujarati.

From the day of Makar Sankranti, the sun begins its northward journey or Uttarayan journey. Therefore, this festival is also known as Uttarayan. Sankranti is deemed a Deity. As per the legend, Sankranti killed a devil named Sankarasur.

Sankranti (Sanskrit: संक्रान्ति saṁkrānti) means transmigration of the Sun from one Rāshi (constellation of the zodiac in Indian astronomy) to the next. Hence, there are 12 Sankrantis in a year.

One of the most significant features of this festival is to wear the colour black which is otherwise considered taboo to wear on festive occasions. Since Makar Sankranti marks the last day of the winter solstice, it is considered to be the coldest day of winter.

It is the day when the sun starts its northern movement, hence this day marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Being the last day of winter, this day turns out to be the coolest day of the entire season. Since black is a colour that absorbs heat, people wear it to keep warm.

Makar Sankranti is a major harvest festival marking the onset of spring season in India. The festival is known by different names in various parts of India, such as Lohri in North India and Pongal in Southern regions. Earlier, Aryans started celebrating this day as an auspicious day for festivities.

The first day of the festival is called Bhogi Pongal, when people worship the sun god and Mother Earth. The first paddy harvested is cooked with milk to make a sweet dish for the occasion.

Do not consume Non-Veg Garlic, onion and meat should not be consumed. Do not say abusive nor angry words to anyone throughout the day.

* You should not eat garlic, onion, chicken or egg on this day. * You should avoid consuming alcohol on this day.

So, Non-Veg is not allowed and even some of the food items like onion, coffee, tea, overly spicy food, salty food, etc are also not allowed because they all are not stawik.
