Narrative structure is about story and plot: the content of a story and the form used to tell the story. Story refers to the dramatic action as it might be described in chronological order. Plot refers to how the story is told. Story is about trying to determine the key conflicts, main characters, setting and events.

The social function of narrative is to amuse, entertain and to deal with an actual or vicarious experience in different ways. It also deals with problematic events which lead to a crisis or turning point of some kind, which in turn finds a resolution.

In the narrative, analyze the author’s use of techniques such as similes, comparisons that use the words “like” or “as,” and metaphors, which make direct comparisons without these words. You can also look closer at images the author describes and consider whether they carry symbolic meaning to the story as a whole.

The purpose of the text is to entertain or amuse readers or listeners about the story. Narrative is basically story and within this, story telling, there are many kinds of narrative – comedy, mystery, romance, horror are some of the commoner types.

Complication. A Complication is when a problem or a dilemma disrupts the normal life or comfort of the characters and sets off a sequence of interesting events.

There are three generic structure of narrative text, namely: Orientation, Complication, and Resolution.
