SS400 steel is a structural hot Rolled steel in the form of plates, sheets & strips for general structural applications. SS400 is a material grade and designation defined in JIS G 3101 standard. JIS G 3101 is a Japanese material standard for hot Rolled steel plates, sheets, strips for general structural usage.

AR400 stands for abrasion resistant with a minimum hardness on the Brinell scale of 360 and a nominal hardness of 400. Typical uses of AR steel, which is classified as a carbon steel, include chutes for gravel or coal in mining, liners for heavy equipment, and rifle range silhouette targets.

What is Grade 50 Steel? Grade 50 steel is a high-strength low alloy steel with a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi and minimum tensile strength of 65 ksi. Grade 50 contains more alloying elements than a plain carbon steel and has a greater resistance to atmospheric corrosion.

High carbon steel offers the greatest strength and hardness compared to mild and medium carbon steel plate. However, high carbon steel is less ductile than lower carbon steels, meaning it is much harder to machine or form.

The major difference is impact resistance. AR500 has higher abrasion resistance, but AR400 has higher impact resistance. Since AR400 plate is softer than AR500 plate, it can withstand more impact without cracking or shattering.

The 400 series group of stainless steels has an 11 percent chromium and 1-percent manganese increase, above the 300 series group. The 400 series is susceptible to rust and corrosion under some conditions. Heat-treating will harden the 400 series.

AR400 steel plate is excellent for applications in which abrasion resistance is required, but formability and weldability are a must. Because of these properties, it can be used for a variety of different applications.
