So, honor is defined as, “showing esteem for one deserving of respect, attention, or obedience.” The supreme level of honor is reserved for God alone (Deut. 32:51; Psa. 22:3; 33:8; 119:161). To honor God is to revere and fear Him.

It also says, ‘Every person must respect his mother and his father’ (Leviticus 19:3), and it says, ‘God your Lord you shall respect, Him you shall serve’ (Deuteronomy 10:20). Here the same word, respect, is used. The Torah equates the respect you owe your parents with the respect you must show God.

New Testament Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

God want’s us to have a healthy relationship because he chose them for us, He wants us to respect them and listen to their instruction. Obeying our parents is pleasing to God, it says so in scripture. God is pleased with us obeying, loving and respecting our parents.

It’s a tall order, but here are a few ideas to help you get there:

1. Show them a healthy love. This can have different levels of difficulty based on the type of situation in which you find yourself.
2. Treat them with respect. Talk kindly to them.
3. Forgive. Parents make mistakes.

It’s true that every child should learn to listen to what their parents say. Sometimes, however, adults seem to forget how to do the same. Talking back to your parents can be an extremely rocky terrain, especially if you have strict ones who believe that any kind of self-defense is a sign of disrespect.

We honor them by not enabling their bad behavior, or allowing them to continue their abusive ways with us, or others under our own protection. We honor them by giving them clear boundaries and consequences if they are not remorseful, repentant or willing to work towards ending their abusive ways.

“Honor thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee” (Deuteronomy 5:16a). Disrespectful actions of children, no matter their age, are abhorred by God, and there’s no place that’s worse to see the disrespectful actions of children than in a homeschooling family.
