Beneath the natural beauty of Honduras is a high crime rate. Most criminal activity is of the petty theft variety, with pickpockets and purse snatching occurring quite frequently against unsuspecting tourists.

In Honduras, the language used by most of the people is Spanish. There are, however, other smaller dialects spoken in the country such as Creole English and a few languages of Amerindian origin. Honduras is the second-poorest country in Latin America and one of the poorest in the world. Approximately 1 in 5 Hondurans are living below the poverty line, in what can be defined as extreme poverty.

Honduras identifies itself as a mestizo nation — of mixed indigenous and European roots — and officially only about 2 percent of the population is of African descent (though the actual number may be as high as 10 percent).

The main reason for the concentrated violence is that these are the cities where the majority of Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 members live. Violence rises from fights between the gangs to see who gains control over these regions. Outside of these three main cities rate of homicides is much lower.

Crocodiles, snakes, lizards (giant iguana and others), and turtles are found in the tropical forest areas. The fauna also includes deer, peccaries, tapir, pumas, jaguars, and ocelots. Fish and mollusks are abundant in lagoons and coastal waters.

The private sector serves some 10%-15% of the population: those who can afford to pay or are covered by private insurance. An estimated 17% of Hondurans do not have regular access to health services. Total per capita health expenditure was US$212 in 2014, representing 8.72% of GDP.
