Courage is obviously a theme of this novel; it’s in the title. However, the novel questions what courage actually is. Henry equates courage with manliness. Henry weighs courage with survival at several points in the story, and sometimes survival wins, which leaves Henry feeling like a coward.

What news did the tall soldier bring from the river? They were moving into battle the next day. What was the reaction of each (the tall soldier, youthful private, and loud soldier) to the news? The youthful private was scared and nervous.

A tall soldier named Jim Conklin begins his day by washing his shirt, and rushes back to camp to report a rumor he has overheard: the regiment will move into battle the next day. As the men in this particular squad have yet to face any military action, Jim’s words provoke much excitement and debate.

Q: What is ironic about Henry ‘s behavior after he initially runs from battle? A: It is ironic that Henry wants to return to battle very shortly after he first ran; he is drawn to the very thing that he just ran from. Their behavior in general is quite odd, at times hysterical. Henry feels a sudden resentment toward those in his regiment who did not run but, rather, defeated the enemy without him; he feels betrayed by their stupidity.

The lieutenant tells Henry that if he had ten thousand “wildcats” like him, he could win the war in a week. Strangely, Henry feels as though he himself had nothing to do with his brave exploits; rather, it was as if he fell asleep and woke to find himself a knight.

The loud soldier gives Henry a package of letters to forward to his family after his death. He is certain he will die in battle.

He justifies hi running away by if everyone is dead then their is no army. Early in the novel, Henry encounters dead bodies on different occasions. How do these encounters impact Henry? The dead bodies that Henry encounters in the woods scare Henry, but they also give him a reason to justify him running from battle.

why did the youth feel wronged? he felt he was left to fight the enemy while everyone else retreated but really they didn’t.

Why did Henry “fumble with the buttons on his jacket”? Henry fumbled “with the buttons on his jacket” since he is nervous because he is lying about the wound on his head.
