These tiny creatures are referred to as “plankton.” Plankton includes plants and animals that float along at the mercy of the sea’s tides and currents.

Phytoplankton are microscopic marine organisms that sit at the bottom of the food chain. Phytoplankton get their energy from carbon dioxide through photosynthesis (like plants) and so are very important in carbon cycling. Each year, they transfer around 10 billion tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere to the ocean.

Phytoplankton and algae form the bases of aquatic food webs. They are eaten by primary consumers like zooplankton, small fish, and crustaceans. Primary consumers are in turn eaten by fish, small sharks, corals, and baleen whales.

Phytoplankton is eaten by small zooplankton, which are in turn eaten by other zooplankton. Those plankton are eaten by small fish and crustaceans, which in turn are eaten by larger predators, and so on.

Shrimps are omnivores and consume a large variety of food in the ocean. Their favorite food is algae, plankton, and plant particles, and small fishes.

Sea urchins eat using a structure called Aristotle’s lantern. It is made up of five hard plates that come together like a beak. Sea urchins will eat just about anything that floats by. Its sharp teeth can scrape algae off rocks, and grind up plankton, kelp, periwinkles, and sometimes even barnacles and mussels.

All living things need this energy. Without oxygen, very few organisms could survive. The Purple Sea Urchin would die without oxygen, and so would you. Therefore, the respiratory system is essential to most life.

They’re pretty easy going. Mama sea urchins release millions of eggs that are coated in jelly, and keep them close by using their spines to hold on to them. Within half a day, a swimming embryo forms and swims free until it’s a juvenile and sinks to the bottom of the sea.

A few species have venomous spines with potent and potentially deadly effects. Some sea urchins “bite,” and a few have venomous bites. Unlike a sea urchin sting, a bite does not leave spines behind. Sea urchins may also trigger allergic reactions that can range from mild to potentially deadly.
