An absolute path is a fully specified hierarchy of folders that locates the external reference. An absolute path includes the local hard drive letter or the network server drive letter. Relative paths are partially specified folder paths that assume the current drive letter or the folder of the host drawing.

The first difference you’ll notice between the two different types of links is that absolute paths always include the domain name of the website, including http://www., whereas relative links only point to a file or a file path.

Unlike absolute paths, relative paths do not include the domain name. The advantage to using relative paths is that you can change your domain name, and your links will continue to work without having to modify them.

How to find the absolute path of a file in Linux. Since most users do not want to see the full path as their prompt, by default the prompt is relative to their personal directory as shown above. To find the full absolute path of the current directory, use the pwd command.
