Every six months, once in March and again in September, an equinox splits Earth’s day almost in half, giving us about 12 hours of daylight and 12 of night. On March 20, 2021, nature will once again bring us the vernal equinox, the time of year that ushers in spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

The word solstice also comes from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). Solstices occur on the longest day of the year, June 21, the first day of summer and on the shortest day of the year, December 21, the first day of winter. So, in the Northern Hemisphere you have:

• Vernal equinox(about March 21): day and night of equal length, marking the start of spring.
• Summer solstice (June 20 or 21): longest day of the year, marking the start of summer.
• Autumnal equinox(about September 23): day and night of equal length, marking the start of autumn.

The equinox is defined as a day that occurs twice per year when the sun crosses the equator and the night and day are the same length. A day in March that is the beginning of spring and a day in September that is the beginning of fall, are examples of the equinox.

On Earth, there are two equinoxes every year: one around March 21 and another around September 22. Sometimes, the equinoxes are nicknamed the “vernal equinox” (spring equinox) and the “autumnal equinox” (fall equinox), although these have different dates in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The word equinox can also refer to the position of the sun at this moment. This can also be called the equinoctial point. The equinoxes are traditionally considered to mark the start of spring and fall.

At the equinox, Earth’s two hemispheres are receiving the sun’s rays equally. Night and day are often said to be equal in length. In fact, the word equinox comes from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night).

At a deeper spiritual level, according to the Conscious Reminder Blog, the equinox is thought to represent: “the period of struggle between darkness and light, death and life. It occurs when the night and day will be equal, and the journey of the Sun to actually get there also signifies the journey of the Universe.

If you can afford it and enjoy the extra fluff that comes with the Equinox experience, then it is a worthwhile investment. If you don’t care about a “luxurious gym experience” and simply want a more casual or athlete-specific gym, then Equinox isn’t the best option.
