How to Honor a Toxic Mother

1. Honor tip #1: Accept her humanity. Honoring your toxic mother means accepting her humanity, not judging her mistakes.
2. Honor tip #2: Be the change.
3. Honor tip #3: Pray for her.
4. Honor tip #4: Forgive her.
5. Honor tip #5: Love her from your safe place.
6. Honor tip #6: Pull from Jesus.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—’so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

“Honor thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee” (Deuteronomy 5:16a). Disrespectful actions of children, no matter their age, are abhorred by God, and there’s no place that’s worse to see the disrespectful actions of children than in a homeschooling family.

Matthew 15:4 ESV For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die. ‘ God, on the other hand, will teach us many important qualities through toxic parents, ranging from compassion and patience to self-control and wisdom.

On the surface, forgiving your parents (or anyone for that matter) may seem insignificant, but forgiving your mother or father is actually the best thing you can do for the quality of your life.

It’s a tall order, but here are a few ideas to help you get there:

1. Show them a healthy love. This can have different levels of difficulty based on the type of situation in which you find yourself.
2. Treat them with respect. Talk kindly to them.
3. Forgive. Parents make mistakes.

Five ways to deal with a toxic mother.

1. Grieve the loss. “But she’s still alive,” you say.
2. Forgive. Whether your mother knows her behavior is toxic or not, forgiveness is not for her, it’s for you.
3. Get healing. Your mother’s toxic behavior is not a reflection of you.
4. Set realistic expectations.
5. Set boundaries.
