The Amu Darya drainage basin is in orange, and the Syr Darya basin in yellow. The Amu Darya (also called the Amu, Amo River, or Jay-hoon, and historically known by its Latin name Oxus or Greek Ὦξος) is a major river in Central Asia and Afghanistan.

The Central Asia region (CA) comprises the countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Xiongnu. According to a number of sources, one of the ancestors of the Mongols were the Xiongnu, although it is not yet known whether they were proto-Mongols. The Xiongnu were a group of nomads who dominated the Asian steppe from the late 3rd century BC for more than 500 years.

A number of Xiongnu customs do suggest Turkish affinity, which has led some historians to suggest that the western Xiongnu may have been the ancestors of the European Turks of later centuries. Others believe that the Xiongnu are the Huns, who invaded the Roman Empire in the 5th century.

But that was at least a couple of hundred years before Mulan’s time, and in any case the link between the Xiongnu and the Huns is disputed.

From 127 BC to 119 BC during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, the famous generals Wei Qing and Huo Qubing launched three large-scale attacks against the Huns, also known as Xiongnu who disturbed the northern border of the Han Dynasty frequently, and finally expelled them far northwest of the Great Wall.
