A biome is a large group of similar ecosystems. Biomes have similar weather, rainfall, animals, and plants. There are a number of biomes on planet Earth. An ecosystem is often much smaller than a biome.

The tropical rainforest is an example of a very large ecosystem (biome). The World has many different ecosystems. Each one has its own climate, soil, plants and animals.

There are eight major terrestrial biomes: tropical wet forests, savannas, subtropical deserts, chaparral, temperate grasslands, temperate forests, boreal forests, and Arctic tundra.

Terrestrial biomes include grasslands, forests, deserts, and tundra. Grasslands are characterized as lands dominated by grasses rather than large shrubs or trees and include the savanna and temperate grasslands. Forests are dominated by trees and other woody vegetation and are classified based on their latitude.

Ecologists recognize at least ten different biomes. The world’s major land biomes include tropical rain forest, tropical dry forest, tropical savanna, desert, temperate grassland, temperate woodland and shrubland, temperate forest, northwestern coniferous forest, boreal forest, and tundra.

This chapter describes some of the major terrestrial biomes in the world; tropical forests, savannas, deserts, temperate grasslands, temperate deciduous forests, Mediterranean scrub, coniferous forests, and tundra (Figure 4). Life forms can be classified by the location of perennating tissue and plant types.

Deserts

Since changes in climate are gradual, the boundaries between biomes are not usually easy to define – they are transition zones. As a grassland biome becomes a forest biome, there is no sudden change from grass to forest. Instead there is a gradual change.

There appears to be sharp boundaries between each biomes. There will be transitional areas between the biomes where the characteristics of one biome GRADUALLY GIVE WAY to the characteristics of the next biome.

There are three general types of forest that exist: temperate, tropical, and boreal. Experts estimate that these forests cover approximately one-third of Earth’s surface.

A biome is a different form of an ecosystem in which a large land area with a distinct climate and plants and animal species exist. The ecosystem is an interaction of the living and non- living components in an environment. An ecosystem is a biome with its biotic and abiotic factors.

In North America there are about six major biomes.
