Latitude and Longitude These lines are not actually on the planet, but are imaginary lines used to help us find our way around the curved surface of Earth. The imaginary lines circling the globe in an east-west direction are called the lines of latitude (or parallels, as they are parallel to the equator).

What is a meridian? A meridian is a north-south line, selected as the zero reference line for astronomical observations. By comparing thousands of observations taken from the same meridian it’s possible to build up an accurate map of the sky.

There are 360 meridians- 180 to the east and 180 to the west of the Prime Meridian. The meridians in the Eastern Hemisphere are marked as ‘E’ and meridians in the Western Hemisphere are marked as ‘W’.

The Equator is the invisible line that runs around the center of the Earth at 0 degrees latitude. An equator is an imaginary line around the middle of a planet or other celestial body. It is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole, at 0 degrees latitude.

The Prime Meridian divides the globe into Eastern and Western hemispheres, just as the equator divides the globe into Northern and Southern hemispheres. The Prime Meridian is at 0 degrees longitude, just as the equator is at 0 degrees latitude.

Longitude is measured by imaginary lines that run around the Earth vertically (up and down) and meet at the North and South Poles. These lines are known as meridians. Each meridian measures one arcdegree of longitude.

Earth is closest to the Sun during their summer when they are tilted towards the Sun and this means they get 7% more solar radiation. Use a Wristwatch

1. If you have a watch with hands (not digital), you can use it like a compass. Place the watch on a level surface.
2. Point the hour hand towards the sun.
3. That imaginary line points south.
4. This means North is 180 degrees in the other direction.
5. If you can wait, watch the sun and see which way it is moving.

Take the watch off and align the hour hand with the sun. Imagine a line that intersects the halfway point between the hour and 12:00. That line is pointing south. For example, if it’s 4:00, the halfway line will be pointing to 2:00.

Draw an imaginary line from Polaris to the ground. When you face Polaris, you are facing due north; behind you is due south, and due west will be on your left, while due east will be on your right.

Google Maps uses your Android device’s magnetometer to determine which direction you’re heading. Your device needs a magnetometer for the compass function to work, and almost all Android smartphones have these included.

Google Maps is relaunching the Compass feature for Android users. The Compass will be visible on the right side of the screen while a user is navigating to a destination. When the phone is rotated in any direction, the red arrow will always point north.

Like a paper map the top of the map is always north, the bottom is always south, the left of the map is always west, the right of the map is always east.

There’s no place on Earth where East and West, cardinal directions, don’t meet. Britain: The Greenwich Meridian, which runs through an observatory in London’s environs, is technically where East meets West. It was settled upon as the “prime meridian” at an international conference in Washington in 1884.
