NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Monday handed back to China a soldier of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), three days after apprehending him at the southern bank of Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh, official sources said.

According to an American intelligence report last year, the number of casualties on the Chinese side was 35. The Galwan incident was the biggest confrontation between the two militaries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La when India lost around 80 soldiers while over 300 Chinese army personnel were killed.

Galwan river valley is considered a point of great strategic importance for both countries. This road runs along the Shyok River and is crucial for communication close to LAC. It comes up at Patrol Point 14 (PP14) and is a crucial connect between Leh and Daulat Bed Oldie. This has irked the Chinese.

The first attempt last month ended in a bloody clash near the Y Junction in Galwan on 15 June, leading to the death of 20 Indian soldiers and undisclosed casualties on the Chinese side. The social media posts sharing the 1962 news report sought to draw a parallel with the latest border standoff.

Twenty Indian Army personnel including a commanding officer (CO) were killed in a fierce clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Monday night, the biggest military confrontation in over five decades that has significantly escalated the already volatile border standoff in the region.

He said the clash occurred at a time when tension had been easing after India demolished infrastructure it had built on the Chinese side of the LAC in May and withdrew personnel, following an agreement between Chinese and Indian officers.

Sources have said the latest incident of firing in Ladakh region took place around 6-7 pm on Monday evening. The skirmish came even as Indian and Chinese troops are engaged in military-level talks with the latest meeting taking place on Sunday. The Indian troops responded with warning weapons fire.
