The main purpose of the International Space Station is to provide an international laboratory for experiments within the space environment. Which, despite all our technological advances, is nearly impossible to replicate here on Earth.

Space Station is only visible when it’s illuminated by sunlight. During the day, the sky is too bright to see it and as we look up late at night, ISS flies through Earth’s shadow so there’s no sunlight falling on the station for us to see it.

Perhaps that’s why methane is also called “natural gas.” Unfortunately, neither propriety nor intestinal discipline can suppress its unpleasantness lately, because now not just us, but the Earth itself is farting. Methane in the air surrounding these craters already measures 53,000 times the normal concentration.

When it comes to farts, the healthiest thing to do is let them out. However, it is possible to hold them in if you need to, and it probably won’t hurt you. Just be prepared for some discomfort. If you notice you are farting excessively and have other symptoms of digestive distress, you should see a doctor.

Typically, the anus releases extra gas from the rectum without any stool releasing. However, when a person makes a wet fart, there is some kind of fluid or mucus present in the rectum that is either released with the gas or makes additional noise when the gas is passed.

Gases are also what can make farts smell bad. Tiny amounts of hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane combine with hydrogen sulfide (say: SUHL-fyde) and ammonia (say: uh-MOW-nyuh) in the large intestine to give gas its smell.

Your gas may smell like rotten eggs because of the sulfur in fiber-rich foods. Sulfur is a natural compound that smells like spoiled eggs. Many vegetables are sulfur-based. If this is causing your flatulence, a simple change in diet will be sufficient treatment.
