“The Door in the Wall” poses an issue which Wells returned to repeatedly in his writing: the conflict between aesthetics and science. Wells himself was both a scientist and a writer of fiction; similarly, Wallace possesses a vivid imagination but goes into politics, where he is considered extremely rational.

The main theme in The Door in the Wall is perseverance in the face of adversity. The main character, Robin is crippled by a sudden illness just as he is ready to learn to be a knight. In that time period, it was essential that each person, especially young boys, learn to be a functioning part of society.

The Door in the Wall Quotes and Analysis. Throughout the book, Brother Luke reminds Robin to look for the door in the wall. This phrase is used as a metaphor for how he should always have faith in the path set before him because there will eventually be an opportunity that takes him to his destination.

“Always remember that,” said the friar. “Thou hast only to follow the wall far enough and there will be a door in it.” “I will remember,” Robin promised, but he wasn’t sure that he knew what Brother Luke meant to say.

Usually used in the home’s interior, pocket doors are doors that “disappear” into a special crevice inside the wall when opened. They are generally top-hung and slide along a track mounted on the ceiling. Some homeowners ask for pocket doors simply because they like the style.

Use a Solid Core Door. The type of door you install can also make a difference in how your door operates. We’ve found that solid core doors with a little more weight to them glide on the pocket door track better than hollow core doors. The extra few pounds just makes it better in my option.

Pocket doors are a great solution for smaller spaces that lack the wall space for a full swing door. This makes them perfect for small bathrooms, closets and connecting those two areas, for example between a master bath and the walk-in closet.

If you do it right and use the proper kit, it works fine. (Note: It’s OK if this sleeve intersects with another wall, but you might need special hardware to reinforce that juncture if a supportive stud needs to be removed.)

A pocket door requires a “sleeve” inside the wall to retract into. The existing wall should also be thicker than 4 inches, as the standard pocket door thickness is about 2 inches.

To install a pocket door in an existing wall, you have to remove drywall, and it’s easier to uncover the entire wall instead of trying to work in a limited opening. You’ll need to set new king studs and trimmers, place the header and install cripple studs between the header and the top plate of the wall.
