Plot. In 1930, Esperanza lives in Aguascalientes, Mexico, daughter of wealthy landowners Sixto and Ramona Ortega. She lives on her family’s ranch, El Rancho de la Rosas, with her mother, father, and grandmother Abuelita. The day before Esperanza’s 13th birthday, her father is murdered on his way to town.

Like Ryan’s grandmother, Esperanza lives in a camp for farm workers in California and has a hard time adjusting to her new life as a worker. Back in Mexico, Esperanza had her own room, and servants cooking and cleaning for her.

What inspired you to write Esperanza Rising? The book was inspired by some actual events, the results of my research, and my own imagination. Although the book is based loosely on my grandmother’s immigration and parallels her story, Esperanza Rising is a work of fiction.

Why does Esperanza never return to the Monkey Garden? Esperanza feels ashamed after trying to help Sally, but she does not know why. Going to the garden would remind her of those feelings, so she never returns.

There is no doubt due to her writing talents and her stubborn drive that Esperanza will be able to leave Mango Street. Near the end of the novel, Esperanza learns that she has a desire and a gift to write. I think she will follow this desire as her ticket out of her community.

For Esperanza’s cousin’s baptism, Esperanza’s mother buys her a beautiful new outfit but forgets to buy the shoes that go with it. At the party after the baptism, Esperanza refuses to dance because she is embarrassed by her old brown saddle shoes.
