The chemical energy stored in food is a type of potential energy. Therefore, it can be transformed into kinetic energy. This transformation happens during chemical reactions that take place when the body digests food.

In the body, thermal energy helps us to maintain a constant body temperature, mechanical energy helps us to move, and electrical energy sends nerve impulses and fires signals to and from our brains. Energy is stored in foods and in the body as chemical energy.

Batteries and similar devices accept, store, and release electricity on demand. Batteries use chemistry, in the form of chemical potential, to store energy, just like many other everyday energy sources. For example, logs store energy in their chemical bonds until burning converts the energy to heat.

The transfer or flow due to the difference in temperature between the two objects is called heat. For example, an ice cube has heat energy and so does a glass of lemonade. If you put the ice in the lemonade, the lemonade (which is warmer) will transfer some of its heat energy to the ice.

A few examples of heat sources are the sun, friction, chemical reactions and the earth. The sun is a natural heat source that is renewable and that can be converted into electricity. Life on earth depends on heat from the sun. The heat within the earth is known as geothermal energy.

There are three basic ways to transfer heat energy: convection, conduction, and radiation. Convection transfers heat energy through gases or liquids. Conduction transfers heat energy from one solid to another. Radiation transfers heat in the form of waves or particles through places where there are no molecules.

Natural sources of light include the sun, stars, fire, and electricity in storms. There are even some animals and plants that can create their own light, such as fireflies, jellyfish, and mushrooms. This is called bioluminescence. Artificial light is created by humans.

Our local star, the Sun, emits most of its light in the visible part of the spectrum. Reflections of visible light waves are the source of the color we can see. Ultraviolet light is generated by very hot objects like stars.

The Moon gets its light from the Sun. In the same way that the Sun illuminates Earth, the Moon reflects the Sun’s light, making it appear bright in our sky.

These different “faces” are called phases and they are the result of the way the Sun lights the Moon’s surface as the Moon orbits Earth. The Moon can only be seen as a result of the Sun’s light reflecting off it. It does not produce any light of its own.
