The Road Star holds a TOTAL of 5 Litres/5.3 US Quarts of oil, but you don’t use that much unless you strip the engine down.

Pull the cap and its dipstick out of the motor. Look at the oil mark on the tip of the dipstick. Ideally, the oil mark should be positioned midway between the “Full” and “Fill” lines imprinted on the dipstick.

Stop on a level surface and just IDLE for about a minute, keep the bike upright (remain seated on it) Turn off engine, place bike on sidestand, and remove the seat, and take out the dipstick. Now hold the bike LEVEL, stick the cleaned dipstick back in the hole take it out & check the level.

Be sure to use bicycle lubricant, not WD40 or another solvent. Putting anything other than bike lube on your components can cause them to corrode faster. I’ve had customers tell me they’ve used motor oil, baby oil, coconut oil, vegetable oil, etc.

Lubricate it Using WD40 or 3-in-1 oil may seem pudent but it won’t things running smoothly and will cause dirt and grime to stick to the chain and prematurely wear.

Light machine oil is a good substitute for 3 in 1. You give the fingerboard a lemon oil treatment first – use pure lemon oil – leave it on for about a minute then thoroughly wipe off, then add a couple of drops of 3 in 1 or light machine oil (the type used on sewing machines etc.)

Lubing a chain with vegetable oil While lubing your chain with vegetable oil will work for the short term (it is oil after all), it’s really not advisable. It will gum up your drivetrain more quickly than a purpose-made lubricant, attract more dirt, and is better left in the kitchen.

3 in 1 is fine for a gun oil, I’ve used it for decades without issue.
