The degree of hardness of a pencil is printed on the pencil. B stands for “black”. These pencils are soft. H stands for “hard”. HB stands for “hard black”, which means “medium hard”. F stands for “firm”.

“H” pencils feature harder graphite. In other words, a “4H” pencil is harder than a “2H” pencil while a “4B” pencil is softer than a “2B” pencil. Harder pencils produce lighter marks since less of the material is released as pressure is applied. Softer pencils make darker marks since more of the material is released.

B9 is the softest and darkest. 9H is the lightest and hardest graphite pencil. So a B6 is softer and darker than a B2. An 6H is harder and lighter than a 2H and much harder and lighter than a HB or a B pencil.

The HB Scale The letter “H” is used to indicate the hardness of a pencil’s mark. The letter “B” is used to indicate the blackness of a pencil’s mark (a darker mark means a softer lead). The letter “F” is used to indicate that the pencil lead is a special formulation that will maintain a fine point.

The higher the number before the H, the harder and lighter it will be. B pencils have less clay filler and the core isn’t as compacted which makes them darker and softer. The higher the number before the B, the softer and darker it will be.

Most pencil manufacturers outside of the U.S. use this scale, using the letter “H” to indicate a hard pencil. Today, however, most pencils using the HB system are designated by a number such as 2B, 4B or 2H to indicate the degree of hardness. For example, a 4B would be softer than a 2B and a 3H harder than an H.

“B” or “2B” pencils as well according to the same FAQ. Generally, a #2 pencil is about the equivalent of an HB pencil. According to this system, pencils are graded on a continuum for “H” (hardness) and “B” (blackness), with a number to say how hard or how black it is.

Sketching in red pencil or other coloured pencils gives a drawing a classic feel. The Italians used to draw with silver, sharpened to a point. It oxidizes on the paper and gives a red tone. Drawing in greylead can make a drawing too cool.

These excellent quality graphite pencils encouraged wider use by 19th-century artists, and pencil drawing became commonly used for studies and preliminary sketches. The graphite pencil could be used on almost any type of drawing surface, a fact that helped make it indispensable in the artist’s studio.

Is Staedtler the king of pencils? The color part of the end dip changes depending on the grade: green for 2H, blue for H, red for HB, black for B, and orange for 2B.

These pencils are, of course, Blackwing 602s. We’ve known Disney animators and artists past and present use Blackwing pencils, but this is the first time I’ve seen Blackwings tied directly to Walt himself.
