Major peaks visible from Denver The most prominent mountains close to Denver are Pikes Peak to the northwest, Mount Evans directly to the west and Longs Peak southwest of the city. Mount Bierstadt and Torreys Peak are both fairly prominent, as well, and Grays Peak is the highest peak in the Front Range.

So get out of the car and instead spend your time hiking, biking, shopping, and sipping in Denver’s closest mountain town – Golden. Located only 12 miles from downtown Denver, Golden is where the plains meet the mountains.

Mount Bierstadt is the closest 14er to Denver and one of the best hikes in Colorado. The trail is easy to navigate, the hike is fun, and the views are awesome. It’s also relatively easy for a 14er – the elevation gain isn’t terrible, but there is some Class 2 terrain near the top.

Denver is near the mountains, not in them. Just beyond is the “Front Range of the Rocky Mountains,” a series of formidable snowcapped peaks that rise to 14,000 feet. Denver might not be in the mountains, but the mountains still dominate the city. The picturesque mountain panorama from Denver is 140 miles long.
