Eastern Europe is formed by countries with dominant Orthodox churches, like Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine, for instance.

If we look now to where Romania is located on the map, we will find that it represents a significant part of the European Union’s Eastern border. Romania is also very close to the Middle East, since the Turkish capital, Istanbul, is at 7 hours’ drive from Bucharest. There are also connections via the Black Sea.

In conclusion, the main reason Ireland did not join the Schengen Agreement is because they wish to control the immigration status of non EU citizens. Ireland is not part of mainland Europe, and it made sense for the country to control their borders the way they see fit.
