The exercise: Brown eyes, blue eyes. Elliott taught third graders at a school in Riceville, Iowa, a small town in rural northern Iowa. And then she told the children that the brown-eyed students were smarter. Elliott came up with an explanation: Intelligence, she told the children, was determined by melanin.

Jane Elliot’s ‘The Blue Eyes and Brown Eyes Experiment’ was unethical in that she created a segregated environment in a third grade classroom. The results of the experiment outweigh the harm that was done immensely. The students took turns being the superior eye color as well as being a minority.
