California Quails (Callipepla californica) are black or brown with white streaks, but their bellies are all different colors from bluish grey to light yellow.

Adult males are rich gray and brown, with a black face outlined with bold white stripes. Females are a plainer brown and lack the facial markings. Both sexes have a pattern of white, creamy, and chestnut scales on the belly. Young birds look like females but have a shorter topknot.

The button quail (Coturnix chinensis), which comes in a number of different colors like silver, white and even blue-faced, is another such novelty quail that owners often keep in apiaries.

Sexual dimorphism does not become obvious until the contour feathers emerge when the quail are 2 to 3 weeks of age. The birds usually are sexed by the difference in color of the breast feathers, the male having brownish- red feathers and the female character- istically having tan (gray) feathers with black speckles.

What does a Celadon quail egg look like? Celadon quail eggs come in a range of colors, from very pale blue, to nearly robin’s egg blue, to a slightly greenish seafoam shade. They may be a pure solid color, or have adorable little speckles.

The Celadon Quail are a special variety of Coturnix Quail who carry a rare, recessive gene (the celadon gene) which causes their eggs to be a gorgeous blue color.
