When Nwoye initally hears the story of Christ and listens to the uplifting Christian hymns, he becomes attracted to the new religion. Nwoye feels accepted and spiritually rejuvenated by the Christian religion. He ends up defying his clan members, family, and way of life by converting to Christianity.

Nwoye converts to Christianity largely to reject the excessive standard of masculinity his father wants him up to uphold. Nwoye is not at all like his father, and Okonkwo constantly punishes him for being different. Stifled by his father’s expectations, Nwoye runs away and joins the European church.

After several days, they ask the leaders of the clan for land on which to build a church. The elders agree to give them a part of the Evil Forest, where people who died of evil diseases are buried, as well as the magical objects of great medicine men.

He secretly prefers them to the bloody war stories told by Okonkwo. Much later in Mbanta, Nwoye is hypnotized by the sound and story of the missionaries’ song. He is compelled to convert to Christianity against the expressed wishes of his father. After his conversion, Nwoye prepares to go to missionary school in Umuru.

The conclusion of Chapter 16 describes what Nwoye finds appealing about the Christian religion. Although Nwoye doesn’t understand the basic theological principles of the new religion, such as the idea of the Holy Trinity, he feels emotionally drawn to the beautiful hymns.

Chapter 8: 1. Why did Nwoye leave his father’s hut when his father fell asleep? Nwoye left as he had become even more scared of his own father. The reason for this fear is that Okonkwo killed Ikemefuna, who he saw as a son, so what was to stop him from possibly killing Nwoye as well.

Nneka converts to Christianity because she gave birth to four sets of twins, and all the children have been abandoned in the Evil Forest. She is pregnant again.

Okonkwo’s accidental killing of a clansman is a crime against the earth goddess, and he knows that he and his family must leave Umuofia for seven years.

Okonkwo

Although he feels betrayed by everyone in his community, Okonkwo may be his own worst enemy. His inflexible understanding of traditional Igbo masculinity leads him to develop an aggressive and unforgiving personality. Okonkwo’s personality allows no room for nuance or change, and alienates others.
