The Strait of Magellan, as it became known, is located near the tip of South America, separating Tierra del Fuego and the continental mainland. Only three ships entered the passage; one had been wrecked and another deserted.

Strait of Malacca, waterway connecting the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) and the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean). It runs between the Indonesian island of Sumatra to the west and peninsular (West) Malaysia and extreme southern Thailand to the east and has an area of about 25,000 square miles (65,000 square km).

It is the location of the deepest point in the Arctic Ocean. The outer rim of the trench is at a depth of 2,700 m (8,900 ft) and contains about 600 km2 inside the rim, descending to approximately 5,550 m (18,210 ft) at its greatest depth.

The Arctic Ocean is the shallowest (mean depth 1361 m) and has significantly larger continental shelves than other oceans. The deep central Arctic Ocean Basin consists of four abyssal plains separated by submarine ridges.
