Intrusive rocks, also called plutonic rocks, cool slowly without ever reaching the surface. They have large crystals that are usually visible without a microscope. This surface is known as a phaneritic texture. Perhaps the best-known phaneritic rock is granite.

Once all liquids solidify, crystal growth stops. The size of crystals produced depends on the rate at which the magma cools. If cooling is very slow, minerals have lots of time to grow, and so large crystals are produced. If cooling is rapid, little time is available for growth, and so crystals will be small.

Place your jar in a warm, dry place so that the water evaporates faster. Boiling the water and placing the jar or glass in a warm place will speed up the formation of crystals.
