Be encouraged about the fact that you are absolutely capable of hanging wallpaper yourself, but also know that there are professionals who do this everyday. Either way, wallpaper is not going out of style anytime soon, so I encourage you to find a way to incorporate it in your home.

Why not use Wallpaper?

• It is more expensive than paint.
• Traditional wallpaper is difficult to maintain and remove.
• The edges may separate from the wall, especially in damp weather, and need to be reattached or pasted.
• Patterns need to be matched and well-aligned together.

Removing existing wallpaper can cause damage to your walls if it is not done correctly. You need to strip it off with the right chemicals or tools. It is also possible that your existing wallpaper could damage your wall while it is stuck to it due to high humidity or moisture that is trapped behind the paper.

No matter how tempting it is to start in a corner of the room, resist it and hang the first piece of wallpaper in the middle of the wall. Using a plumb line and pencil, mark a vertical line on the wall. You can use a spirit level instead if you prefer.

It’s difficult to make perfectly straight, long cuts on a vertical surface, even when you’re using a straight edge. Especially when your wallpaper is as thick as cardboard and you have two layers of it to cut through.

Don’t choose the wall behind you or out of your line of sight when you enter the room. For maximum impact, choose the wall you first see when you walk into the room. Don’t choose a wallpaper design that’s too plain and light in colour for a high traffic area as it will experience more wear and tear over time.

Using small patterns or patterns on only one wall makes the room look smaller. Take a chance. Install wallpaper with a big pattern on all the walls, and the ceiling of the room will expand in size. Grasscloth is a wonderful, neutral way to make the walls disappear.

“If you’re going to commit to wallpapering a room, then you need to go for it and wallpaper the whole space in order to create a cohesive, glamorous interior,” explains Bullard. A patterned wall can actually make a small space feel larger. It breathes new energy into the room.”

So if you sleep in a room that’s been papered with just any old wallpaper, you could be exposing yourself to eight-hours straight of breathing in toxic fumes each night. If that wallpaper has been adhered to your walls with toxic wallpaper paste, it could be even worse.

Though the actual cost depends on the brand and the quality of product chosen, a wallpaper is much costlier than a paint. Yet, a wallpaper lasts longer than a paint and hence can be termed as a cheaper option in the long-term in spite of a high initial cost.
