The main sources of sediment along coasts are: (1) the coastal landforms themselves, including cliffs and beaches; (2) the nearshore zone; and (3) the offshore zone and beyond.

These regions are vulnerable to hydrogeological hazards and are seriously affected by coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion in the phreatic aquifer, and sea level rise, which are worsened by human action, thereby increasing the risk of land degradation in the coastal regions.

If the submersion of the island becomes regular, it will be more difficult for plants to grow and flourish, which begins a new cycle of coastal erosion and the negative impacts that come with it, including increased erosion and possibly permanent loss of the island, depending on how much of an island it is.

Submersion in water impacts both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which impact heart rate and heart rate variability [8]. Apnea increases the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, inducing bradycardia in the body [1, 6, 8].

The sediment that is submerged during rough weather forms landforms including storm bars. Due to longshore drift some sediment can end up further along the beach from where it started. Often coastal areas have developed sustainable coastal positions where the sediment moving off beaches is sustainable submersion.

Coastal erosion may be caused by hydraulic action, abrasion, impact and corrosion by wind and water, and other forces, natural or unnatural. Also abrasion commonly happens in areas where there are strong winds, loose sand, and soft rocks. The blowing of millions of sharp sand grains creates a sandblasting effect.

The effects of soil erosion go beyond the loss of fertile land. It has led to increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers, clogging these waterways and causing declines in fish and other species. And degraded lands are also often less able to hold onto water, which can worsen flooding.
