This scale is called the decibel scale. On the decibel scale, the quietest audible sound (perceived near total silence) is 0 dB. A sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful than near total silence is 20 dB. A sound 1,000 times more powerful than near total silence is 30 dB, 40 dB and so on.

Don’t get us wrong, the ability to reproduce decent quality sound from a single speaker housing is impressive (and we’ve done it as well) but it’s just that we generally prefer real “stereo” sound to come from two separate speakers where the imaging and soundstage is noticeably better. …

Since we only have two ears, there is really not a better way to reproduce a musical performance. With all that being said, if you want to use 4 speakers to play a stereo recording, you will want to place the speakers in a manner that allows most of the audience to get the stereo effect intended.

3-4 Speakers With a small room, you will need less speakers to produce the effect you’re looking for. So if you live in an apartment or you’re setting up a surround sound system in a small room, 3-4 speakers should be efficient enough, easier to arrange and would be idea to help you achieve the best sound.

So even though it’s not completely necessary to have rear speakers in your system, it makes sense if you want to truly experience immersive sound. Leaving out rear speakers means the only real difference you’ll see compared to stereo sound is improved bass.

For headphones, upgrading to 5.1 channel surround sound is definitely worth it. If you can’t install or invest in a 5.1 channel system, then virtual surround sound is a good middle ground between having some surround sound rather than none. It can help your media feel more immersive and your music feel less flat.

If you’re looking for the best audio quality then I’d definitely recommend a 5.1 channel system. It’s the most widely available type of speakers, meaning you have a massive range to choose from and so should get more for your money.

A 7.1 system is a great choice for larger rooms where sound may get lost in the space. It provides a deeper surround sound listening experience. Theater quality media designed for a 7.1 system will come through clearer than it would on a 5.1 system.
