Shakespeare adapted the story from Epitia, a tragedy by Italian dramatist Giambattista Giraldi (also called Cinthio), and especially from a two-part play by George Whetstone titled Promos and Cassandra (1578). Nevertheless, critics have repeatedly argued that Measure for Measure’s duke was created by Shakespeare as a flattering representation or an idealization of King James or as a vehicle for Shakespeare to instruct the new king in just rulership.

The theme of Measure for Measure is the temperance of justice with mercy. Merciful justice is juxtaposed throughout with strict enforcement of the law. The duke, Isabella, Escalus, Mariana, and the Provost all advocate mercy.

The ending Luckily, another prisoner has just died of a fever, and his head is sent to Angelo instead of Claudio’s. The disguised Duke tells Isabella that Claudio has been executed but says she will be able to speak to the Duke personally about Angelo.

Angelo

Shakespeare’s comedies have a winning formula: In the end, nobody dies and people get married! Measure for Measure is technically a comedy. At the end of the play, the Duke asks Isabella to marry him. Later, the Duke restates his proposal to Isabella, and again, Shakespeare gives her no words to express herself.

Kate Keepdown

At the end of the play he is punished by the Duke by being made to marry a prostitute, Kate Keepdown, whom he has made pregnant and abandoned. Most notable about Lucio among Shakespearean characters is his view that marriage is in itself a form of torture – a fate worse than death.

“Measure for measure” also means, “an eye for an eye,” or “revenge.”

Angelo is left in charge by the Duke, who pretends to leave town but instead dresses as a friar to observe the goings-on in his absence.

The Tempest Summary. Prospero uses magic to conjure a storm and torment the survivors of a shipwreck, including the King of Naples and Prospero’s treacherous brother, Antonio. Prospero’s slave, Caliban, plots to rid himself of his master, but is thwarted by Prospero’s spirit-servant Ariel.

In The Tempest, Ariel is indebted to Prospero because Prospero used his magic to free Ariel from a cloven pine when he arrived on the island. The witch Sycorax imprisoned Ariel before she died, and he remained imprisoned in the tree for twelve years until Prospero freed him.

Forgiveness and freedom are the keynotes of the play. Prospero, the Duke of Milan, has been grievously wronged by his brother Antonio who was entrusted with the administration of his dukedom.

However, it can be argued that Prospero is an evil character. First of all, he caused the terrible storm which, in turn, caused the shipwreck. He let Alonso believe that his son was dead. He used the shipwreck and his magic to manipulate all of the characters.

According to Caliban, Prospero tricked him by treating him kindly in the beginning so that he would show Prospero the secrets of the island. It is Prospero’s contention that Caliban tried to assault Miranda, and therefore their treatment of him is justified.

There must be other more obscure reasons why Prospero decides to forgive when he has the power to take revenge. The marriage between Miranda and Ferdinand could be a possible explanation for Prospero’s behaviour. After all, love can dissolve all hatred. Prospero was only pretending to be moved by Ariel.

Alonso asks Prospero for forgiveness. I expected Antonio to ask for Prospero’s forgiveness seeing as how he is his brother, and it was his idea to get rid of Prospero.

Ariel disappears to magically repair the ship and fetch the crew. Ariel then brings in Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo, wearing their stolen clothes. Prospero forgives Caliban and with a final request for calm seas and kind winds, he sets Ariel free.
