He is thought to be one of the great emperors because he expanded the Tang Empire and the government stabilized during his reign of 23 years. Under his rule, the territory of the Tang Empire expanded and prospered. His reign was known as the “Reign of Zhenguan” which was considered a prosperous era.

Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty is considered by many historians to be one of the greatest emperors in the history of China. He helped his father, Emperor Gaozu, to overthrow the Sui Dynasty and establish the Tang Dynasty.

He is traditionally regarded as a co-founder of the dynasty for his role in encouraging Li Yuan, his father, to rebel against the Sui dynasty at Jinyang in 617. Taizong subsequently played a pivotal role in defeating several of the dynasty’s most dangerous opponents and solidifying its rule over China.

Taizong (birth name, Li-Shimin, l. 598-649 CE, r. 626-649 CE) was the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty and is considered one of the greatest rulers in Chinese history for his reforms of the government and the laws, his religious tolerance, and the prosperity China enjoyed under his reign.

Taizong became the model emperor who set the standard for every other successful ruler who followed him. His name was always invoked in praise for his policies and he is still considered one of the greatest rulers in Chinese history.

In 907 the Tang dynasty was ended when Zhu deposed Ai and took the throne for himself (known posthumously as Emperor Taizu of Later Liang). He established the Later Liang, which inaugurated the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.
