Five Alpine White Dodge Challenger R/Ts were lent to the production by Chrysler for promotional consideration and were returned upon completion of filming. Four cars had 440 engines equipped with four-speeds; the fifth car was a 383 with automatic.

Most of the movie is a car chase and none of the cars used for it, survived. Fortunately, in 1997 the movie was remade and all five Challengers used for it were saved. Ted Stephens, owner of Stephen’s performance in Anderson, Alabama, owns all of them.

The man responsible for the thrills: stunt-driving legend Carey Loftin (who was also stunt coordinator on “Bullitt”). “Carey was fantastic,” Barry Newman recalls. “They’d say, ‘Carey, can you roll this car four times and end up right here?’

Based on two true life stories, one of a San Diego police officer who was kicked off the force in disgrace, and another one of a man who died after a high-speed chase which led to his crashing into a police roadblock, Vanishing Point is pure twentieth-century high octane nihilism.

Vanishing Point is a 1997 television film directed by Charles Robert Carner and starring Viggo Mortensen, Jason Priestley, Peta Wilson, Christine Elise, and Keith David. A remake of the 1971 cult film of the same name, it aired on the Fox television network.

Trivia The car featured in the film is a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, with a 440 cubic-inch V-8, and not a 426 Hemi V-8 (as is often believed). Eight white Challengers loaned from the Chrysler Corporation were used during the filming.

If you do not know it, the primary narrative is essentially no narrative: a muscle car speeding across the desert chased by police, initially for speeding and ultimately just to exert power. This fellow is Kowalski, a name imported from a landmark film. He simply drives.

The Sunshine State is Florida. Super Soul: And there goes the Challenger, being chased by the blue, blue meanies on wheels. The vicious traffic squad cars are after our lone driver, the last American hero, the electric centaur, the, the demi-god, the super driver of the golden west!
