Apollo 11 (July 16–24, 1969) was the spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin formed the American crew that landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC (14:17 CST).

In 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong took man’s first steps on the moon, but who was holding the camera? Rest assured, NASA didn’t call on Moon-dwellers to perform camera duties. They simply mounted a camera on the Descent Stage of the Lunar Module and pointed it at the steps.

Starting with the Apollo 15 mission, a more robust, damage-resistant camera was used on the lunar surface. For each lunar landing mission, a camera was also placed inside the Apollo Lunar Module (LM) descent stage’s modularized equipment stowage assembly (MESA).

A Kodak stereo close-up camera was used to film the lunar soil from only inches away. Three Hasselblad 500EL cameras were carried. Two of the Hasselblad cameras were identical to those carried on the earlier Apollo 8 and 10 lunar orbit missions. Two were taken on the Lunar Module Eagle to the Moon’s surface.

A total of 18 people have lost their lives either while in space or in preparation for a space mission, in four separate incidents. In 2003 a further seven astronauts died when the shuttle Columbia broke up on re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. …

The United States spent $28 billion to land men on the Moon between 1960 and 1973, or approximately $280 billion when adjusted for inflation.

Article II of the United Nations 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which governs the activities of states in the exploration and use of outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, states that the Moon: In other words no country can claim ownership of the Moon.

At the time of the Apollo 11 flight in 1969, Neil Armstrong was paid a salary of $27,401 and was the highest paid of the flying astronauts, according to the Boston Herald. That translates to $190,684 in 2019 dollars.

An astronaut’s primary job while on the space station is to conduct scientific experiments and maintain the space station. When not working, astronauts do a lot of the same things we do on Earth. Astronauts also complete a two-hour daily exercise program to remain fit.

The cost was $25 billion. Today, more than half of all Americans are too young to remember that historic mission.

Unfortunately for astronauts, the IRS doesn’t consider international airspace, or international waters, or space, abroad. This means that they will have to pay US taxes on all of their income. Expats can claim the Foreign Tax Credit by filing Form 1116 when they file their federal tax return.

The mission is expected to cost $2.7 billion, rising to $2.9 billion when inflation is factored in.

Elon Musk said in December that he’s confident SpaceX will be able to land humans on Mars by 2026. Sadly, there are many obstacles to this ambitious plan, and his dreams of terraforming the Red Planet may not come to fruition in our lifetime.
